When Cuãƒâ¡ndo Cuando Al Are We Going to Travel Again In Spanish

All air passengers 2 years or older with a flight departing to the United States from a foreign country are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than 1 day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight.

Air passengers will also be required to confirm in the form of an attestation that the information they present is true.

If you recently recovered from COVID-19, you may travel with documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (i.e., your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight's departure from a foreign country and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel). Please see the CDC website for details about the testing requirement to travel by air to the United States .

In addition, all non-immigrant, non-U.S. citizen air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to the United States.  Exemptions to the vaccination requirement will be considered on an extremely limited basis.  Please contact your nearest embassy or consulate to apply for an exemption for the vaccination requirement.  Please visit the CDC webpage for more information about exemptions.

Travelers should be ready to make plans to extend their stay at their own expense if they unexpectedly test positive for COVID-19 and can't travel.  The U.S. government cannot pay for accommodation if you unexpectedly test positive and can't fly home as planned.

Country-Specific Information

U.S. citizens can travel from the United States to Spain:

  1. On non-essential travel (such as tourism or business) if they show they are vaccinated  or have a recovery certificate .
  2. On essential travel (such as workers and students with specific long term visas) if they show they are vaccinated , have a recovery certificate , or show a negative COVID test .
  3. Minors up to 12 years of age do not have to show vaccination or negative COVID test.
  4. Minors between 12 and 18 may show they are vaccinated  or have a recovery certificate , or a negative PCR  test taken within 72 hours of the trip.

Vaccines are valid from 14 days after the last dose up to 270 days. If more than 270 days (9 months) have passed since receiving the last required dose of their COVID-19 vaccine, U.S. citizens must show proof of having received a booster shot. The booster shot certificate is valid since the day it was administered.

Recovery certificates that are issued at least 11 days after the first positive COVID test, and up to a maximum of 180 days after the date of sampling, are accepted as valid. The COVID tests accepted are those authorized by the European Commission and must have been performed by healthcare professionals after October 1, 2021. Passengers with a Recovery Certificate other than an EU Digital COVID Certificate or equivalent must also provide documentary proof of the diagnostic test from which the Recovery Certificate is derived.

Please read the  Spanish Ministry of Health's website for more detailed information.

Additionally, U.S. citizens traveling from the United States to Spain must present upon arrival in Spain a QR code generated through the Spain Travel Health portal, obtained through the website or by downloading the "SpTH app" in Google Play Store or iTunes App Store for each traveler, regardless of their age and duration of the trip, unless they have a EU Digital COVID Certificate (DCC). To travel to Spain, it is not necessary to complete the SpTH health control form if you have an EU DCC, or equivalent EU certificate. The CDC vaccination certificate is not a digital certificate; therefore travelers from the U.S. who have a CDC vaccination certificate must still generate the QR code through the Spain Travel Health portal.

U.S. citizens who are traveling to Spain from a country that is not the United States should make sure they follow the guidance published by Spanish authorities on their local Spain Embassy website.

COVID-19 FAQs

Q:  If I t ested positive for COVID-19 in Spain after my vacation and am unable to board  my return flight to the U.S., what should I do ?

A: Travelers should be ready to make plans to extend their stay at their own expense if they unexpectedly test positive for COVID and can't travel.  The U.S. government cannot pay for accommodation if you unexpectedly test positive and can't fly home as planned.   Options to consider include: booking new accommodations online, extending a stay at current accommodation, working through a health/travel insurance company, working with a travel company (if travel was booked through a particular company), and requesting assistance from friends and family.Getting health/travel insurance prior to a trip is highly recommended: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/before-you-go/your-health-abroad.html.

All air passengers 2 years or older with a flight departing to the United States from a foreign country are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than 1 day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight.  U.S. Embassies and Consulates do not have the authority to waive this requirement. COVID testing is readily available at clinics throughout Spain and certificates of recovery can be issued by local doctors in Spain or often, via virtual telehealth with your medical provider in the U.S.

Find additional information about documentation of recovery on the CDC website here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel/travel-assessment/us-citizen-national-lpr-immigrant.html, and: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html.

Q: Has the U.S. Embassy thought about a plan to offer the vaccination to U.S. citizens?

A: The United States government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas.  U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad should follow host country developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.  In the case of U.S. citizens residing in Spain, you may find useful information here: https://www.vacunacovid.gob.es/

Q: How are U.S. citizens living in Spain, who are not in the Spanish Social Security system, going to get vaccinated?  Will the Spanish government deal with foreign residents or do they have to go to their own embassies or consulates?

A: Foreign residents of Spain who are part of the public health system should contact their regional public health provider  to ensure that they are included in the provisions for their corresponding group.  For those who are not part of the public health care system, each region of Spain  is setting up a system to allow you to register for the vaccine.

Q: I am a U.S. citizen, but I live in Spain.  Can I go to the United States to be vaccinated? If so, what do I have to do to get a vaccine?

A: A U.S. citizen can travel to the United States as long as you have a valid U.S. passport and comply with the current COVID-19 negative test requirements.

Q: If I go on vacation to the United States and get infected with COVID, what would happen?

A: In order to return to Spain once you have recovered, if you are still testing positive, you must present a medical certificate as specified here

Q: Do I need to quarantine when I go to the United States?

A: Quarantine is currently not required by any state within the United States. However, that may change without notice. You can find information for each state here:  State, Territorial, Local and Tribal Health Department Search | CDC

Q: If I am fully vaccinated, do I still have to get COVID-19 test before traveling to the United States?

A: Regardless of vaccination status, all airline passengers to the United States ages two years and older must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within one calendar day of travel.  Alternatively, travelers to the United States may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel.  Please see the CDC website  for details and additional information.
